Leaping Lemur

Reserve Natural du Berenty, Madagascar.

Verreaux’s Sifaka lemur are tree dwellers but in an odd way; they hold onto vertical trunks and branches, as opposed to walking quadrupedal on horizontal branches. These lemurs leap from trunk to trunk. When, on the rare occasion, they descend to the ground they do a bizarre dance until they reach the next tree trunk. As I sat between two groups of trees a large family began to cross the opening; it took several lemurs to pass before my laughter eased enough to start taking pictures. As one would cross, the others would sit and watch them, as if an audience in a weird primate ballet. Oh and yes for those that are interested Zaboo from Zoboomafoo is a Verreaux’s Sifaka lemur.
